Locating Cat Whiskers
Once you become attuned to cat whiskers, claims collector Steve Miller, you will be
able to sight them from across a large room. He notes that habitual vacuum cleaning often
spoils an otherwise fertile field, but that a careful watch while cleaning can save a dozen
cat whiskers for the collecting jar.
One of the keys to finding cat whiskers is their smoothly irregular bend. They form
neither a straight line nor an orderly arc, and on a wood floor or a patterned carpet these
properties can be giveaways. Most cats, of course, have simple white whiskers; but
some have varigated coloring which can also assist in telling the difference beween
a cat whisker waiting for salvation and an escaped bit of fishing line (which tends
toward the blue-green on close examination).
